All money raised by rod licence sales goes straight back into the sport. This enables the Environment Agency to carry out work such as habitat improvement, monitoring of fish stocks, restocking and fish rescues – vital when angling is becoming more popular every year. Licence funds are also used to help people take up fishing.

Anglers fishing in England and Wales must hold a valid rod licence. The new licence year starts on April 1, and rod licences for the 2010/11 season are available now. The attractive credit card-style licences show pictures by celebrated Wales-based wildlife artist David Miller, and this year feature either a barbel or a sea trout.

Prices for the 2010/11 rod licences are:

20/11

Coarse and trout

Salmon and sea trout

Full

£27.00

£72.00

Concession

£18.00

£48.00

Junior

£5.00

£5.00

8 Day

£10.00

£23.00

1 Day

£3.75

£8.00

Getting a rod licence is easier than ever - they can be bought or renewed online at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/rodlicence, by telephoning 0844 8005836 or at any Post Office in England and Wales.

The Environment Agency’s Head of Fisheries Mat Crocker said: “The new rod licences are available now and look great. Sensas has responded to this by releasing a range of Power Pencils specifically designed for commercials. The new range consists of five floats in total, namely the thick, hollow-tipped Choppie, the long-bristled Paste, shorter-bristled Pellet and F1 patterns and finally a wire-stemmed Maggot. Each is available from 0.1g up to 1g and are sure to be a big hit this year.
Shimano's Next Generation www.advancedpolefishing.com/News/article_206/ Fri, 05 Mar 2010 12:00:00 +0000
Tackle giant Shimano will this month unveil its long-awaited pole range involving its GenX concept.

These have taken three years to develop, with the critical input from Alan Scotthorne and Steve Ringer. In fact, Shimano told us that it has been through 30 to 40 samples to get to the finished stage! The first three poles to hit the shops will be the Super Ultegra, Fire Blood and the top-of-the-range Aspire Ultra. Each will come at 16 metres as standard and be rated to No20 elastic.

Product manager Richard Griffiths told Pole Fishing: “Steve and Alan have not just helped perfect new poles, they have helped to perfect a completely new mandrel. The key factor for us was a pole that is not just stiff and not just light but a perfect balance of the two. The GenX concept also means that a comprehensive list of extras are available, from top kits starting at £50, power No4s, half extensions and stiff, high-quality cupping kits.

“The poles will also carry big spares packages with the Aspire and Fire Blood coming with nine kits and the Super Ultegra having seven.”

Expect to see a full On Test with these poles very soon!
Charity Event With A Difference www.advancedpolefishing.com/News/article_207/ Fri, 05 Mar 2010 12:00:00 +0000
Popular West Midland match organiser Lee Woodhouse has devised a novel pairs event to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Taking place at Barston Lakes near Solihull, West Midlands, on Friday, August 20th, 2010, a list of top names have agreed to attend, including Andy May, Darren Cox, Grant Albutt, Steve Ringer, Mark Pollard and Pole Fishing’s very own Jon Arthur. As in previous years, the idea is to encourage every family member to have a go at fishing, no matter which cultural or social background they may be from.

The initiative’s timing has been deliberately planned to incorporate the end of the school term and more of the school holidays to enable activities to be linked with both schools and families. By extending the timetable, fishery owners, angling coaches and retailers will have a greater span of time to be able to take part and support events in their areas.

Mark Lloyd, chief executive of the Angling Trust, said: “Last year’s National Fishing Week saw thousands of new anglers learn to fish and we want to build on that with a longer event to maximise opportunities for people from all walks of life to discover the joys of game, coarse and sea fishing.

“National Fishing Month will also promote the benefits of angling to society, the economy and the environment to the general public, who tend not to understand our weird but wonderful sport. Everyone at the Trust is very excited about the initiative and we will do all that we can with the Angling Development Board, the Angling Trades Association, the Environment Agency and Sportsmatch, to make this important initiative a success.”

More details on how to organise or participate in events across the country will be posted on the new website www.nationalfishingmonth.com
